Arranging Your Toolbars -Tip of the Week

Sunday, June 12, 2005

When you first install any Microsoft® software , such as the Word® word processor software , Excel® spreadsheet software , or the PowerPoint® presentation graphics program , all the icons (buttons), such as to Save or Print, usually appear in one row at the top of your screen. It's harder to work with your icons this way because, since there's usually not enough room to display them in one row, you might not be able to see them all. Here's how to put those icons onto two rows instead, and learn another little trick along the way:

Click on the Tools menu at the top of your screen in the program you choose. Scroll down and click on Customize. Once the box pops up, click on the Options tab.

You should see two checkboxes. One says "Show Standard and Formatting Toolbars on Two Rows." The other says "Always Show Full Menus." Check both of them.

The first check box will place all your icons on two rows so you can see all of them. The second will enable you to all your choices at one time if you click on the menus at the top of your screen, such as File, Edit, View, etc. (If you don't check this second box, you'll see a part of a menu when you click on it, and wait for a delay before the full menu appears.)

Click on Close to close the box. Now you should have less trouble finding those icons the next time you need them!
